Amendments and years you missed

If a previous return was wrong, or you have years that were never filed, we can fix both. Amended returns go on Form 1040-X and can usually be filed for the three most recent tax years. Unfiled back years can be prepared for any year — and filing voluntarily, before the IRS contacts you, almost always produces a better outcome than waiting.

Send us whatever you have. Missing documents are usually recoverable from IRS transcripts, which we can pull on your behalf once you sign a Form 8821 or 2848.

Keep your records for at least three years

The IRS can examine the books, papers and records supporting anything on a filed return. Holding on to what backs up your return for three years from the filing date is the simplest protection against a problem later.

Questions

Common questions

Which states do you file?
All fifty, plus DC. Multi-state filing is common for our clients and is included in the standard fee band rather than charged per state as a surprise.
I got RSUs this year and my broker statement looks wrong.
It usually is. Broker 1099-Bs frequently report a cost basis of zero on RSU sales, which makes it look like you owe tax on the full sale value. We correct the basis using your vesting records so you are not taxed twice on the same income.
Can you file if I moved states mid-year?
Yes. You will typically file part-year resident returns in both states, and we allocate income between them so the same dollar is not taxed twice.
