QuestionsFrequently asked questions
If yours is not here, ask — we answer questions before you become a client, not only after.
Getting started
How do I send documents securely?
Five ways, and all of them work: the client portal, a shared cloud folder, email, WhatsApp or post. The portal is our default — we create the account and send you an invitation, since we verify who you are before anything sensitive moves — but plenty of clients email instead and that is fine. Compare the options.
Do I have to create an account?
No. The portal is the route we recommend, but it has never been a requirement — plenty of clients email their documents or share a cloud folder, and we handle everything from there.
How long does it actually take?
Most straightforward returns are drafted within 24–48 hours of receiving complete documents. Cross-border and business returns typically take three to five business days.
Can you file if I live outside the U.S.?
Yes. A significant share of our clients are abroad. Everything is handled by call, email and digital signature.
Cost and payment
What does it cost, and when do I pay?
You get a fixed fee in writing before any work begins. You pay after you have reviewed the draft return and approved it — never before.
Do you charge extra for each state?
No. Multi-state filing is included in the standard band.
What if my situation is more complex than it looked?
We come back with a revised quote before doing the extra work, and you can decline it.
Foreign accounts
I have bank accounts outside the U.S. Do I have to report them?
If the combined highest balance across all foreign accounts passed $10,000 at any point in the year, an FBAR is required even if no tax is owed. Form 8938 may also apply at higher thresholds.
Does a dormant account count?
Yes. Dormant accounts, provident funds, LIC policies and accounts you hold jointly all count toward the threshold.
I have not reported foreign accounts for several years.
There are formal IRS catch-up procedures for non-wilful failures, generally with far lower penalties than being discovered. Come to us before the IRS comes to you.
ITINs
Can I apply for an ITIN without filing a return?
In most cases no — Form W-7 has to accompany the federal return that creates the need for it.
Will a notarised copy of my passport work?
No. The IRS requires the original or a copy certified by the issuing agency.
When does an ITIN expire?
If it has not appeared on a U.S. federal return for three consecutive tax years, it expires and must be renewed.
Problems and prior years
Can you fix a return someone else already filed?
Yes. We prepare amended returns on Form 1040-X for prior years, and we can file back years you missed.
The IRS sent me a letter. What now?
Send us a photo of the notice before you reply to it. We can respond on your behalf, whether or not we prepared the original return.
How long should I keep my tax records?
At least three years from the date you filed. The IRS can examine the books and records supporting anything on a filed return.
I owe more than I can pay.
Instalment agreements, currently-not-collectible status and offers in compromise all exist. Which fits depends on your assets and income, and we will tell you honestly which you are likely to qualify for.
